Quaker Steak & Lube

In part one of the summer travel series (of which I'm not sure how many I'll write) I'll introduce you to a uniquely named establishment that's right up Car Crazy's alley. At first glance Quaker Steak & Lube looks like a place you'd go to get an oil change and tire rotation instead of wings by the dozen and a cold beer. Quaker Steak & Lube is styled after old time gas stations that began to shutter in the 1970's during the gas crisis. It was the mission of its founders George “Jig” Warren III and Gary “Moe” Meszaros to preserve that precious culture right in its tracks, literally. This is a shot of a 1936 Chevy they saved by leaving it on it's grease rack in the building they converted into the restaurant. You can read more about their fascinating history on their web page.

What a fantastic idea!
Their mission was not only to make great food for public to enjoy in a car lovers paradise but more importantly to preserve a part of American culture that was on the brink of extinction. Now I can show my kids American muscle cars at it's best. The location I attended was in Edison, NJ. It has a replica gas pump, mock service bays as seen here in this shot labeled  "wings," "burgers", "ribs".  They have a full assortment of food offerings from burgers to steaks, to wings and salads. A full bar offering many tasty beers on tap. One of my favorite things about this place is the theme of cars! The interior is littered with car memorabilia like this Nascar mounted to the ceiling! One of my favorite cars here is the 1974 Monte Carlo SS. It's cleverly showcased on a shop lift several feet up in the air.  If that doesn't get your motor on you can sit under the car and have a look at the under carriage! It's all authentic parts! I should know, I'm the kind of car dork that went up to it and checked! What a fun place to chill out and "enjoy the ride."
This aint' no drive-in but you sure can get a great steak & lube.
The Coors Light Nascar hangin' around with some friends.

It's no super hero but it does bare the SS on its grill as in Super Sport!

This 1970's muscle car greets you at the front door.

Well, lube is in the restaurant's name after all!
